Thanks to advanced hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling and vast reserves of shale energy, the United States is producing more of the energy it uses here at home, reducing imports and making our country more energy secure. The U.S. is now the largest combined oil and natural gas producer in the world. By the end of the decade, the United States will overtake Saudi Arabia as the world’s largest oil producer. This means that the net import share of U.S. petroleum and other liquids use could reach zero between 2035 and 2040, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Greater energy self-sufficiency will make the United States more secure in the world.
